by Brenda Becker on January 22, 2014 – A year ago my in-laws moved to a continuing care retirement community. She has had on-and-off again issues with her knees and he has experienced some cognitive impairment. While they didn’t want to leave their home, they decided that a retirement community would provide all the supports they might need in the future. To sweeten the deal, the community’s marketing department offered to pay for some of the moving expenses and they recommended a few moving companies and move managers.
Well, the move managers, or downsizing experts as they are often called, were a godsend from two perspectives. For their children, it meant fewer days away from work to help sort through old stuff and pack up the house. But more importantly, for my in-laws it meant so much more. Experts came in to work through years of paperwork, organize the entire move from packing to unpacking, and listen to stories of what had happened in that house. They seamlessly coordinated with the moving company. They were present when the contents of the house were loaded onto the truck and they set up the new apartment while our children took their grandparents out for lunch.
Was there still stress on move-in day? Of course, but the level of stress was greatly diminished by the knowledgeable move managers who love the work they do. What can they do for you? Here’s just a sampling of some additional services they offer: staging of the old home; floor plan design for the new home; sorting and removing items for donations, sale or trash; transition management and more.
