Zentangle is an easy way of creating beautiful images by drawing structured patterns called tangles. It is a proven method to promote mindfulness and foster self-esteem, focus, relaxation, creativity, and stress relief. It is also easy to learn and easy to do. People of all skill levels can create Zentangle art and have fun in the process! Even those who think they cannot draw can learn Zentangle and create stunning original art! The possibilities truly are infinite! Jaqui MacMillan, CZT, is a certified ZentangleR instructor and looks forward to sharing this experience with students.

Class meets in the Heuer Art Studio at Carroll Lutheran Village.

Cost is $35 per adult per session.

Learning to Abstract
Jan 8 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Learn some of the basics of how to take a closer look at an object and paint the essence of it rather than the whole image. This class will take a look at some abstract works of art, then create a series of small paintings from a chose image. Students are asked to bring their favorite medium: oil, acrylic, watercolor (and brushes and palette) pastel or colored pencils. Canvas paper and other papers will be provided.

Learn to draw and paint and have a fun time. Learn to see things as an artist and try different techniques and materials. Students can explore watercolor, acrylic, oil or mixed media as you work from your own references or ones provided by the instructor. Enhance your creativity working with a limited color palette and a fuller range. Also use color theory to achieve harmonious colors and mix specific desired hues.

Class is held Tuesdays through March 13 and is open to all older adults in the community.  Kathleen Stumpfel from Carroll Community College instructs.

Democracy in America

Examine aspects of democracy in contemporary American society in this interactive discussion series. Explore Constitutional principles in the light of such issues as equality, diversity, immigration, terrorism, partisanship, political ideologies, education, interpreting history, science and critical thinking, health care, the social safety net, civic responsibility and the future of American democracy. Review the statistics, present a breadth of viewpoints and discuss ways to educate the public about civic involvement.

Tea Cup Pottery

Tea Time! Well almost. Join us as we use a pinch pot technique to produce a unique teacup. Discuss the Japanese and Chinese customary tea ceremonies and the pottery. Compare the Japanese Chawans (tea bowls) and traditional Chinese tea sets. Allow the discussion to guide your teacup design or bring your imagination to life. Complete the fourth session with a casual tea ceremony staring your cup! Tools clay and glaze will be provided.

Tuesday, March 20: Frank Lloyd Wright – the American architect, interior designer, writer and educator, who designed more than 1,000 structures, 532 of which were completed.

Tuesday, April 17: Antoni Gaudi – the architect from Reus, Catalonia, Spain best known as a practitioner of Catalan Modernism. Gaudí’s works have a highly individualized and distinctive style

Cost for all four sessions is $22.50 or $9 for a single session for CLV residents or members of the Carroll County Arts Council. $25 for the series or $10 per single session for non-residents and non-members.

Introduction to Collograph Printing

Join instructor Susan Williamson from the Carroll County Arts Council to learn the basics of creating a collograph, a printing plate made by gluing objects to a support, preparation of the support, and basics of printmaking.   Students will create a series of prints.

South Mountain and Antietam
Feb 16 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Join instructor Phil Muskett as he leads the class through the Maryland Campaign of 1862. The Maryland Campaign of 1862 was Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s first invasion of the North. Union General George B. McClellan was called back to lead the Union Army of the Potomac to repel this incursion into Maryland. The climax of this campaign is the Battle of Antietam, the bloodies day in American history. In the classroom session, we will discuss the actions of the bloody campaign. The second session of the class will be an approximate four-hour bus trip to the Antietam battlefield. Once on the battlefield we will stop at key areas of the fighting and discuss the action. This will allow us to use the battlefield as a classroom.  There will be rest breaks!

Lecture class is scheduled for February 16 followed by the Antietam trip on February 23.

Course is open to all older adults in the community.
