June is Men’s Health Month
June 1, 2019 – June is Men’s Health Month, a perfect time to raise awareness on preventable health problems, early detection, and treatment of diseases impacting men. Take steps now to be healthy and safe this month and throughout the year by making your health and the health of loved ones a priority. Here are some ways to get started:
- Eat your fruits and veggies. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables daily provides the vitamins and minerals needed to protect your body from chronic disease. Local produce is abundant this time of year, making it easy to include more fruits and vegetables to your diet.
- Exercise regularly. Adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as walking, swimming or biking, every week. Muscle-strengthening activities should be included twice a week. Break activity into smaller sessions to achieve the recommended amount. Call the Wellness Center to make an appointment with one of the certified personal trainers to begin a new exercise program or to update your current routine.
- Get regular check-ups. Men should see their doctor or health professional regularly and learn about their family health history. It is also essential to be aware of symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, excessive thirst and issues with urination. See your doctor if any of these conditions exist. An annual physical will establish a baseline for blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and PSA (a screening test for prostate cancer risk).
- Refrain from smoking. Quitting has both immediate and long-term benefits. Overall health will improve and the long-term risk of heart disease, lung disease and other smoking-related illnesses will decrease.
Live long and prosper!
