On any given day at Carroll Lutheran Village, you might find Cathy Molloy tending to a garden bed, talking to neighbors along a tree-lined path or sitting quietly beneath a gazebo as birds move through the branches above. For Molloy, life outdoors isn’t just a pastime; it’s essential to her well-being.
“Outdoor life is vital to my sense of wellness, peace of mind and overall happiness. Everything I love about nature is here,” she said.
A First Impression Feels Like Home
Molloy and her partner, John Ebert, were searching for “the right” Life Plan Community. After exploring nine options, they arrived at CLV for what was supposed to be a quick drive-through. Instead, it became a turning point.
“The homes feel more like living in a real neighborhood; they don’t have a retirement feel. Moving here felt like we were simply moving into a new chapter,” said Molloy.
Their first impression of CLV stayed with them. Surrounded by mature trees, open green spaces and a setting that feels both spacious and inviting, CLV offered a sense of comfort they hadn’t experienced elsewhere.
“It reminded us of Vermont. There was just something about CLV that felt like home,” said Molloy.
Gardens That Grow More Than Flowers
Molloy, a master gardener, helps lead CLV’s garden club—a growing, energized group of residents who share a passion for plants and creativity.
What started as a small effort has blossomed into a thriving initiative. Residents collaborate on projects like refreshing one of CLV’s larger gardens, which is composed of smaller gardens sections that are maintained by residents who live nearby.
“It’s like our backyard. People walk through, stop to talk and ask questions; it becomes a place to connect,” stated Molloy.
Beyond beautification, the club has introduced plant swaps, seasonal sales and even a budding flower cart filled with resident-grown arrangements.
Those who prefer a lighter touch can enjoy container gardening or simply appreciate the blooms.
“There’s something for everyone. Even if you don’t want to dig in the dirt, you can still enjoy being part of it,” said Molloy.
Across campus, residents can also claim plots in community gardens, where everything from tomatoes to corn thrives. With shared tools, deer-proof fencing and seasonal tilling provided, gardening is accessible and rewarding.
Spaces to Pause, Connect and Reflect
In addition to gardening, CLV offers spaces for activities as well as reflection.
One of Molloy’s favorite spots sits atop a hill near the croquet court and dog park, where the westward views create the perfect backdrop for evening sunsets.
“There’s always a breeze, and the sunsets are incredible. It’s the kind of place where you can sit and relax after dinner,” said Molloy.
CLV’s open fields provide a front-row seat to nature in motion, like watching the purple martins gracefully flying to and from the community’s purple martin sanctuary. Benches invite walkers to pause, while walking paths encourage exploration.
There’s also the joy of everyday moments: neighbors chatting during morning walks or while sitting in a gazebo, or dog owners gathering for the weekly doggy social hour.
“It’s not just about being outside, it’s sharing that experience with others,” said Molloy.
A Lifestyle That Frees You to Enjoy More
A benefit to living at CLV is the easier lifestyle it offers.
“In Vermont, I didn’t have time to sit and relax. There was always something I had to do—shopping, cooking, maintaining the docks and other chores,” said Molloy.
At CLV, responsibilities are reduced, creating time for something else—reading outside, taking a walk or discovering an artistic talent.
That shift has opened doors Molloy didn’t expect. In addition to leading the garden club, she’s taken up watercolor painting, winning recognition for her work, and entered a croquet tournament, in which she reached the semifinals.
Similarly, her partner is exploring woodworking and trying other new creative outlets.
“It’s exciting to feel like you’re still growing. You discover talents you didn’t know you had,” Molloy said.
Nature, Community and a Renewed Sense of Purpose
Molloy’s story is about more than gardens or scenic views. It’s about what happens when environment and opportunity come together.
At CLV, outdoor living isn’t just an amenity, it’s a catalyst for connection, creativity and wellness.
Molloy’s advice to others considering a move is to visit the community — walk around, see the gardens and talk to the people who live and work here.
It’s the best way to know if it feels right.
The right place doesn’t just meet your expectations, it helps you grow beyond them.
